Blue cut a tendon on her leg while she was in turnout on Friday morning, a cut so bad that it required emergency surgery at New England Equine in Dover, New Hampshire. Although she has so far come through the surgery very well (biggest worry is infection over the next five days), the surgeon gave her a “less than fair” chance that she will be able to compete again.
This news was not what we needed. Just when Kate got herself back on her feet, and figured out the problem at Millbrook (Blue had ulcers, something many competition horses get, which caused most of her behavior). Kate was so happy to have solved that and excited to get back to competing then this happens – the kid just can’t get a break!
We got to watch the whole surgery through a big glass window, and now Blue has a giant cast on her leg! She will be in NH for 7 to 10 days, then we’re bringing her home – to a different barn!
We have not heard from A yet – can’t figure out why. You would think if one of your client’s horses was injured you would call and at least express a bit of sympathy, or to see if there were anything she could do. But nothing. We have heard indirectly that she has already decided what we will and will not do in terms of where Blue will spend her time rehabbing, mainly based on unfounded judgements of things she’ll never know about.
All we can do for now is go visit her – it’s an hour and a half to get there, but she seems happy to see Kate, and I know Kate needs to see her. It’s just too painful to think about what that poor girl must be going through.
